Glades Air Conditioning and Authorized Appliances was formerly Glades Gas Company of Okeechobee. In 1915, Daniel B. McCarthy, fondly known as Big Mac, came to Okeechobee from Nebraska to survey land that his father had purchased sight unseen. It was Daniel’s first job after his college graduation as an engineering student. Dan liked Okeechobee so much that he decided to stay. He opened his first store; D. M. McCarthy General Store in 1916 on Park Street which is now the location of Lawn Tamer.
